On February 17, 2009 the California Solar Initiative began two programs called MASH and SASH. These programs are designed to help property owners to install solar on their large buildings, to pass on the electrical savings to the property residents, and to educate the renting public to the benefits of solar energy. Depending on the size of the system, the type of installation, and who will benefit from the solar electricity created, rebates can amount to 90% of the cost of the system. The rebates are $4.00 per watt if the tenants benefit from the solar electricity, and $3.30 if the common area is using the solar power.
